TL;DR: Group Head of Health Intelligence Advert out! Two Boards and a Clinical Conference.

[week ending 01/10/2021]

Who did you talk to outside of your organisation? Met with colleagues from UHL to talk about a system we have in common. Really engaged session, and a healthy range of opinions, helped by an excellent paper prepared by Matthew which framed the discussion perfectly.

I talked to quite a few colleagues from across the Northants ICS on the National Inclusion Week event, discussing Staff Networks led by Cherron Inko-Tariah. I joined the discussion about Board sponsorship of the staff Networks and enjoyed learning from other colleagues about what has worked in their areas.

I joined a group coaching session with the Trusted Executive Fellowship, which I joined earlier this year. The power of this group of people continues to intrigue and amaze me. It’s the most engaged action learning set I’ve ever been part of. One of the group came with a work challenge about seeking feedback and adapting their role, following a period of organisational growth. Far from the usual platitudes, the group posed a mix of supportive and challenging questions, prompting further honesty and conversation. I think the difference between this group and all others I’ve been part of is a) there is some excellent facilitation by some skilled coaches and b) everyone who joins the group committs to the Nine Habits of Trust, which means you can’t be passive in a discussion. I’ve not raised any of my challenges in the group yet, but I can see as I get to know everyon more, they will be an invaluable network.

I did a quick interview with Hannah from Digital Health, talking about our EDMS progress. I also had a really fun evening, recording a podcast with Amy, Kieran and Mike. It was a great laugh and we got to cover a big range of topics. Amy amazed us with her wide knowledge of the Microsoft stack and other stuff, Mike talked about his favourite cuddly toy and I failed to bite my tongue and mentioned at least three books in the course of the conversation.

What would you have liked to do more of? This was one of the rare weeks that I’ve got to the end of and feel pretty ok with what I’ve achieved. There’s always more, but I’m getting better at determining what is a reasonable achievement each week.

The Clinical Collaboration Conference clashed with the Paper Picnic, hosted by Dione, so I had a strong sense of missing out. The photos shared by the KGH team looked amazing. I’m looking forward to hearing more next week.

What do you wish you could have changed? Someone told me about a perception that someone has about me, which took some processing and working through in my head as my intentions are very far from the perception they had of me. Once I’d let the emotion die down, I allowed myself to think some more and think about how I’ll change that perception, rather than just say they were wrong and carry on.

What did you learn? More about where our data is stored and what we might do about it during the Health Intelligence firebreak (see notes from a previous week). Firebreak kicked off on Friday,

What did you enjoy? On Friday, we held our Group Clinical Collaboration Conference, which was a follow-on from a meeting we’d had in November 2019, but hadn’t managed to meet again in 2020 for obvious reasons. Tristan (one of the NGH CCIOs) and I talked about the Group Digital Strategy, and the work done since the previous conference, under the title of What have the Romans ever done for us?

The conference majored on the draft Group Clinical Strategy and the areas where we might show more ambition regarding clinical collaboration across the Group. I got to meet quite a few colleagues for the first time in person and arrange a few visits to get more familiar with their challenges.

It was the KGH REACH Network meeting this week, and although I joined late due to board running a bit longer than expected, it was a good discussion. I also spent an evening editing a video for Black History month, helped no end by Charlotte sending me a transcript of the videos which made creating the subtitles a snip.

What did you achieve? This week was the board for both Trusts (KGH papers link, NGH papers link), which are two full-on days. Helpfully, as we do more and more together as a group, there are more and more papers that are common for both boards. I supported the COOs present on winter planning updates, a review of theatre efficiencies and some initial work we’d done on health inequalities. I also explained to the board the process to agree the set of metrics we’ll use in Board and Committee meetings.

And finally, a big achievement this week was getting the advert out for the Group Head of Health Intelligence post. This is a massively important role across our Group and I’m really hoping for some brilliant candidates that will make shortlisting really hard (remember not to suck in your application on NHS jobs).
