TL;DR: Official launch of the University Hospitals of Northampton. More Group Digital portfolio planning.

[week ending 02/07/2021]

Who did you talk to outside of your organisation? I attended a demo of the SARD ESR wrapper demo. A great piece of work to put an API in front of the less than integration-friendly ESR product. Really like the approach of Kevin and the team and the creation of Public Money, Public Code.

Ian and I rolled back the years and had a chat with ex-colleagues Iain and Simon from NHSX. We talked about the approach to user-centred design in the ICS plus Simon’s impressive new beard.

I had a chat with Gabriel from IBM and we talked about thoughts on future hospital to inform our hospital rebuild planning regarding digital ambition. I also met with.

To the final person to be recruited into the Group Health Intelligence function. It’s been much harder than I expected to get the right people in place, but we have the first person starting on Monday, which I’m really pleased about.

What do you wish you could have changed? I didn’t attend a single event of the Northampton Wellbeing festival. I hope to catch up on some content over the course of the weekend.

On Thursday we officially launched the University Hospitals of Northampton as the official name of our hospital Group. This is a significant step in the development of our ambitions that started in 2020. There were loads of events during the day, plus some decent looking swag. Sadly due to my incapacity, I wasn’t able to join the Group launch day in person, and we didn’t manage to think of adding a virtual option until too late. The event had had loads of preparation and looked really good. I enviously chatted to colleagues during the day and on Friday and there seemed to be a good buzz.

What did you enjoy? Ian, Dan, Phil and I met face to face to talk about how we work as a Group Digital Portfolio rather than as two Trusts. Given that I am still one-handed, my lovely father-in-law chaufferred me to Northampton and then went off to see some old friends who’d moved to the area. Ian brought his Sharpie collection and did a great job of facilitating the session and post-it wrangling. We agreed a number of actions to take forward in July.

What did you achieve? My reverse mentor and I did a recording in preparation for Board later this month, talking about what we’ve learnt from the arrangement.

I wrote a bunch of short outline business cases in response to an regional ask. we only had a day or so to pull them together, so the quality isn’t what I’d like, but it felt important to get a few of these on the radar.

I went to the NGH Hospital Management Team to talk about the resequencing of the NGH EPR.

With the help of surgery and health intelligence colleagues, I progressed the review of the Model Hospital data some more, working out if we can replicate the data. I enjoyed meeting Andrew, the new KGH health intelligence business partner for surgery and he took me through the new theatres dashboard, which looked very nice.

I hosted a discussion across the Group to talk about result reporting. There’s a situation where the person requesting the result may not be the right person at the point when the result arrives. We talked about how we might be able to use RPA to automate the result notification. This was one of those great meetings, where everyone had a strong opinion, had lots to contribute and the hour went by quickly.
